Transporting Horses

Transporting your horse can be a stressful experience for you and your horse. If you and your horse will be traveling in a trailer, boat or airplane for longer than five hours, you need to prepare for the horse trip to ensure a smooth ride.  (check out our  horse travel tips  for additional information.)

In cool weather, your horse can loose up to five pounds every hour you travel.  Therefore you need to plan carefully to provide adequate food and water before, during and after your trip.  In hot weather it can be magnified, so prepare accordingly for the season in which your horse trip is scheduled.

Horses also run the risk of respiratory disease during long-distance travel.  So make sure the conditions of the vehicle are clean to minimize the affect of possible contaminates.

Dehydration is another important factor that can affect your horse when you travel.  Some horses may even refuse to drink when traveling, so be sure to hydrate your horse as much as possible before departing on your trip.  Same goes true for feeding-many horses will not eat while on the road, so again, be sure to give your horse the proper nutrition ahead of time.

Along with not eating, horses are susceptible to another common ailment known as Colic.  Since the horses diet consist of high fiber nutrition, be dehydrated aggravates this by making it hard to digest.  Be sure not to change your horses diet for two weeks prior to travel.

Each state has specific livestock guidelines.  Please take the time to check out the area you will be traveling to ahead of time to ensure that you and your horse are all set.  Our State Horse Transportation Requirements page is a good start, so check it out!

Lastly, but most important before traveling with your horse, Equine Insurance.  Make sure you have proper insurance to cover you, your horse and your equipment in case of emergency.  To get a quote or receive additional information check out our partner Equine Insurance..
